I recently traveled to New York City for an exclusive look into Market week with our Juniors buyer Amanda. She covered everything from fall tops and bottoms to accessories and handbags. A predominant style choice for fall is definitely anything army green or camouflage and a ton of metallic’s. Also expect laidback tees, soft shirts, everyday basics, and graphic tops in elevated fabrics and textures.
Our first stop was the One Step Up office where they gave us an inside preview for fall 2013. Stocked with Back to School apparel, it was hard to see how Amanda could choose the right pieces. A big trend is striped shirts, lace trim and back details like cut outs. Leggings are another big item for fall with pleather and cable knit taking the lead. Side mesh and studs will also be a hot commodity. Traveling a short distance away we ended up at Fantaeyes where Amanda was on the search for eyewear, belts, scarves, and of course jewelry. Top sunglass shapes for 2013 would be the iconic Wayfarer, a modern cat eye, and Aviators. For belts it’s all about the skinny. Also bling on the belt itself and buckle will play a major factor. For scarves, the infinity scarf was amongst the popular bunch. Look out for the animal prints, skulls, polka dots and our favorite the owl print. After lunch we met with Dan at Unionbay for a brief look at handbags. He showed us quilted bags and the trendy cross- body. The best colors for fall will be black, brown, and cognac. Then it was on to the Doneger group where they showed us a preview of what to expect this autumn. Some items we tackled were Vegan leather trim tees which they called the new mixed media top, active- influenced tops like baseball and raglan tees, French terry or jersey with updated novelty trims, embellishment or screening sweatshirt bodies with the “it” shape, and tunic silhouettes which is the all-important top for leggings. Big animal faces such as critters, owls, foxes, wolves and tigers are being seen all over as well as Navajo print. Sweaters are all about patterns, texture and stitches. They key is mixing of the yarns, patterns and textures. Destructed and boyfriend washed jeans continue to play a key factor for fall. Colors will not be as big but keep focus on neutrals. Utility influences return in non-denim with neutral colorations, enzyme wash twill fabrics, cargo pockets and camo prints. Trends to keep an eye out for are Rustic Damsel, Baroque Mademoiselle, Varsity Fixen, and Warrior Goddess. Our last group was Almost Famous where we saw lots of burnt Henley’s, skull and cross embellished blouses, peplum tops, and printed button downs.
